PGA Tour Congaree Golf Club shows off course in one-time tournament

RIDGELAND, S.C. — The dark clouds that had loitered ominously in the sky over Congaree Golf Club were about to burst with unwelcome torrents of rain.

Most spectators at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree on Saturday had already retreated to their cars and a dry return to their homes or hotel rooms. A man on a shuttle bus racing the raindrops made his way to one of the parking lots.

“Who’d have thought we’d have this out here,” the man said to fellow riders, “out in the middle of nowhere?”

He was referring not to the summer storms routine for

Tim Herron leads PGA Tour Champions event by four strokes

DES MOINES, Iowa — Tim Herron shot a 9-under 63 on Saturday to take a four-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic.

Trying to win for the first time on the 50-and-over tour, Herron birdied the par-4 18th for a back-nine 30 and 14-under 130 total at Wakonda Club.

“I haven’t been in this situation for probably a decade,” Herron said. “Just go out and play each hole at a time. These guys are good. Someone else can shoot 9 under, so I’ve got to still kind of put the pedal down in the right spots. If

PGA schedule this week: Tour heads to SC Congaree course

The dateline is “Ridgeland,” the nearest post office, but perhaps “Gillionville,” the closest community in the northern portion of Jasper County, would be more appropriate to pinpoint this rural address.

A larger question: How did a PGA Tour golf tournament dubbed the Palmetto Championship at Congaree spring up almost overnight in this sleepy section of South Carolina’s Lowcountry?

Long story short: The Tour needed a replacement for the RBC Canadian Open and state of South Carolina officials joined with Congaree Golf Club representatives to seize the opportunity.

The golf hierarchy announced March 9 that logistical challenges related to the coronavirus

Bluffton’s Bryson Nimmer ready for another PGA Tour event in his backyard

Bryson Nimmer can remember hitting golf balls in the fields at his family’s turf farm when he was growing up.

This week, Nimmer will make his third start in a PGA Tour event this year at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree — while local golf fans use one of the Nimmers’ fields for parking.

“It was wild,” Nimmer said of learning he’d be playing in the one-time tournament so close to home.

Years after he practiced his swing in the turf fields when he accompanied his father to work, Nimmer, now 24, has grown up to become a professional golfer

Jason Kokrak gets second PGA Tour win quicker than first, overcoming Jordan Spieth at Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas — Jason Kokrak played in 233 PGA Tour events before getting his first victory. The big hitter didn’t have to wait nearly as long to win again, though this one might have been harder because he had to overcome a local favorite at Colonial.

Kokrak shot an even-par 70 in a final-group showdown Sunday with resurgent Jordan Spieth, winning the Charles Schwab Challenge at 14-under 266. He was 2 strokes better than Spieth, who hit his approach from the rough at No. 18 over the green and into the water.

“You stay in the moment and it’s

Ridgeland airport expects increased traffic for PGA Tour event

As golf fans prepare to put Congaree Golf Club on their travel itineraries, traffic is expected to increase at Ridgeland Claude-Dean Airport.

Jasper County officials said they have been getting ready for the Palmetto Championship at Congaree since they were notified in March about the upcoming PGA Tour event. The tournament was scheduled for June 10-13 at the club near Gillisonville after the RBC Canadian Open was canceled because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

County administrator Andy Fulghum said in a news release he anticipates an increase in airport activity and the number of visitors.

Airport director Danny Lucas said after
