RIDGELAND, S.C. — The dark clouds that had loitered ominously in the sky over Congaree Golf Club were about to burst with unwelcome torrents of rain.

Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez advances to second round at WTA Tour event

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom — Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez is heading to the second round of the Viking Classic Birmingham.

Fernandez, from Laval, Que., beat China’s Wang Yafan in the first round of the WTA Tour 250 grass-court event on Tuesday.

The 66th-ranked Fernandez won 76.1 per cent of points when she got her first serve in, well above her opponent’s rate (57.5 per cent).

An American professional has reportedly been arrested after a fight broke out during Monday qualifying for this week’s Korn Ferry Tour event.

The bizarre incident took place at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Kansas, where players were attempting to qualify for the Wichita Open.

According to reports, Luke Smith was arrested after being interviewed by police in the clubhouse following a violent altercation with playing partner Austin Dailey.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Tim Herron shot a 9-under 63 on Saturday to take a four-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic.

Vancouver’s Stephen Ames won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his second PGA Tour Champions title, taking advantage of Tim Herron’s final-round collapse.
